A Deal with the Devil
Published by Diogenes as Der Teufel von Mailand
Original Title: Der Teufel von Mailand
After her separation from Frederick Forster, a banker from a good family, Sonia has only one desire: to forget the nightmare and rediscover her peace of mind.
But at first things only get worse. Following an unintentional LSD trip at a disco, reality itself begins to slip through her fingers: suddenly Sonia can see noises, feel colours, taste objects. Deeply distraught, she decides to flee the city for a while.
A strange new health and fitness hotel is about to open its doors in Val Girsch, in the Lower Engadine region of Switzerland. Despite the obscurity shrouding the hotel's finances, Sonia, a trained physiotherapist, gets along well with the young woman who owns the hotel and it is not long before she finds herself agreeing to join the hotel staff. So Sonia ends up in a small town that until now has kept its doors firmly closed to tourists, an isolation the townspeople would dearly love to preserve. But before she realises that, many things have to occur – things that at first seem to make no sense. Only when she stumbles upon an old Engadine legend does she begin to interpret the signs – and to fear the worst for herself and those around her.
