An old king wants to save his life by making a pact with death: Death will grant him one year of life for every youth the old king sends him. The king promises his daughter to the young man who can visit the »fiend« in the stone quarry and come back alive. The young sculptor who works in the castle has long since been in love with the princess and wants to be the first to try his luck... A fairy story about love which cannot be impeded by an old man's wickedness, and about death from which no one can buy their freedom.

Waechter

Friedrich Karl Waechter (1937 - 2005) was born in Danzig (now Poland). Since 1962 he lived in Frankfurt am Main, working first as a graphic artist and later as a free-lancer for various newspapers and magazines, including a number of satirical publications. In 1966 he published his first volume of drawings and cartoons. His famous Anti-Shockheaded Peter was published in 1970. In addition to drawing, Waechter worked for the stage and for films. In 1999 he received the ›German Youth Literature Prize‹ for The Red Wolf.
