


Dear Friends and Colleagues, As 2022 draws to a close, it’s time to look back at the past twelve months. Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov's Grey Bees about the smouldering conflict in Donbass became a title people turned to, with 28 foreign languages sold, an incredible amount of international press and the honour of the ›Prix Médicis étranger‹ this November. His new book, Samson and Nadezhda, is the beginning of a historical crime series taking us back further in time to understand (Post)Soviet realities. In a similar vein, Belarusian author Sasha Filipenko's The Hunt describes the fate of a critical journalist in Russia who investigates an Oligarch - with grave consequences. On the non-fiction side, bestselling highlights were German filmmaker Doris Dörrie’s travelogue The Heroine’s Journey, Donna Leon’s memoir Wandering Through Life - sold in six languages and coming to the US/UK next fall - and Shelly Kupferberg’s Jewish family history Isidor, chosen by Litrix for translation support. In fiction, our top seller Bernhard Schlink’s The Granddaughter, in the Spiegel bestseller list for an astounding 56 weeks, was joined by Ingrid Noll's crime novel Tea Time, which entered the top 10 upon publication. We were delighted when Stefanie vor Schulte’s Boy with a Black Rooster received the ›Mara Cassens Prize‹ for an outstanding debut earlier this year, and excited for Benedict Wells as his coming of age novel Hard Land won the ›German Youth Literature Award‹ in the reader's choice category. Italian and Spanish editions of Patricia Highsmith’s Her Diaries and Notebooks were published to much critical acclaim and we are looking forward to the publications of Andrzej Szczypiorski’s classic The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman with a new foreword by Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie.
